Ellen Rijk & Henny Schakenraad at Breed Art Studios, Amsterdam North, April 25 to May 17, 2026

Breed Art Foundation is pleased to present a new exhibition at Breed Art Studios!

Apparently inspired by different dimensions, such as researching beauty in opposite dualities or in the power of dancing together, those two artists are connected by the subtle, unseen threads of our existence.
Will you be able to find them among the multimedia assemblages and the artworks on canvas and paper on show in Invisible Connections?

The Opening will be on Saturday, April 25, at 17:00.

The exhibition, curated by Luca Rezzolla, will be open from 14:00 to 18:00 on April 26, 27 and May 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17.

We look forward to seeing you!

Ellen Rijk

Ellen Rijk, born 1955, lives and works in Tilburg. She is primarily active in the visual arts, but in the past also worked as a theatre designer.

Dance, or rather movement, is one of the sources of inspiration for her sculptures and installations. Not the professional dance of people with perfect bodies, but the dance of people who do it for the sheer pleasure of it.

In a number of works, dance is a metaphor for life. Seduction rather than confrontation is the key.

At present, she is intrigued by chain dances: groups of people dancing together in more or less complex patterns; from the Lebanese/Palestinian dabke, the Greek sirtaki, the American line dance, the rows of Pina Bausch, the village festival in Belgium, to a simple polonaise: they fill her with joy and warmth. Because in a chain dance, people meet, enjoy each other’s company, and support one another. The beautiful thing is that people are above all TOGETHER. Like the round dance people in Kyiv danced on the frozen river around fire baskets to keep warm at −20 degrees.

In a world spinning out of control, where everything must be fast and intense, her work focuses on time, which she effectively freezes. This leads to a high degree of intimacy and invites reflection.

Henny Schakenraad

As an artist, Henny Schakenraad specifically seeks out the tensions inherent in life, such as limitation and freedom, imperfection and the unpredictable… In her work, she harnesses the power of the associative and the paradoxical, as well as the space between past and present.

She observes, records, and reflects on the many dualities of life conceptually. Her work is not about concrete assumptions. She disrupts existing values to arrive at new interpretations, subtly and unconventionally stretching patterns of thought and expectation.
