Ad van Aart & Servi van Grinsven at Breed Art Studios, Amsterdam-Noord, 5 – 27 September 2026

Klank en de Kleur is a free exhibition with works by Ad van Aart and Servi van Grinsven at Breed Art Studios, Amsterdam-Noord. Curated by Kitty Doomernik and Luca Rezzolla, the exhibition runs from 5 to 27 September 2026. Opening: Saturday 5 September at 5 pm. Van Aart presents sound sculptures that visitors can play themselves, Van Grinsven paintings that invite attentive looking.

Breed Art Foundation proudly presents the final exhibition of the INVISIBLE CONNECTIONS cycle! A sounding colour, visible and audible in the white cube of Breed Art Studios: that will be the result of the interaction between these two very different artists, who are once again connected in an invisible way. Although Ad van Aart and Servi van Grinsven work in different disciplines, they share a similar attitude towards the act of making.

The sculptures of Ad van Aart arouse curiosity. They bring to mind machines or instruments whose workings are not immediately clear. When it turns out that the works also produce sound, the experience gains an extra dimension. The simple sounds and the symmetrical arrangement of organ pipes and other components give the sculptures a monumental, almost hushed presence. Servi van Grinsven also invites the viewer to look attentively. His paintings emerge from the painting process itself: by applying paint, removing it and building it up again. The images are minimal and elemental, but it is precisely there that their sensitivity and poetic power lie.

For both artists, the focus is not on the spectacular, but on attention to material, form and process. Their work asks for an open gaze and rewards the viewer who is willing to look longer.

Ad van Aart

Ad van Aart is a visual artist and sound artist. He uses materials that are less obvious for a sculptor. At thrift shops and similar places, he collects the most diverse objects, which inspire him to create spatial objects and installations. He works, among other things, with organ pipes and blowing vacuum cleaners. With these he builds sound sculptures that the public can operate and play themselves. The sound these objects produce is an extra dimension in his sculptural work. In this exhibition he presents a number of these sound sculptures.

Servi van Grinsven

Servi van Grinsven is a painter pur sang. With a clear visual language and a careful sense of composition, he creates works that invite attentive looking. For Van Grinsven, painting is a process in which every action acquires meaning. The results of his work vary, but always find their origin in exploring the possibilities, the “idiom” of painting. The painting does not ask to be looked at, but to be seen. It is the place of concentrated attention. His work asks for the active involvement of the viewer: only through attentive looking do the nuances and layers of the various images unfold. This exhibition brings together works from different periods and with strongly divergent approaches, making both the limits and the possibilities of painting tangible.
