UNCONSCIOUSNESS QUARANTINE
Alessandra Vinotto
On 19 November 2022 at 5 p.m. at the Breed Art Studios in Amsterdam, the third stage of the exhibition UNCONSCIOUSNESS QUARANTINE by Italian artist, filmmaker and poet Alessandra Vinotto will be opened.
The exhibition was first presented at Spazio46 in the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa and last summer at Castello di Casotto in Piedmont (Italy).
“UNCONSCIUSNESS QUARANTINE was first thought of in spring 2020, when I found myself living isolated from the world due to the pandemic. Since I’m in a high-risk category for infection it was impossible for me to lead a normal life, so I had to ‘flee’ for sixteen long months and shelter in the mountains. I was not even able to live with my son nor any of my family as anyone could have posed a potential danger to my health. There, on a pass at 1500 meters above sea level, where the internet connection is quite poor, I found myself alone every day with the creatures that live in the woods as my only friends. I used my skin, my eyes, my hands and my legs as props whilst, photographing the insects that crawled all over me as well as the wild animals that approached me without fear. And by then, I had almost become one of them.” (Alessandra Vinotto)
“Alone as an anchorite (but also a pagan divinity) capable of projecting herself beyond simple contemplation, elaborating a variously articulated story (images, words, reasonings), Vinotto collects in such void a repertoire of images that document the long period of apparent isolation. A mystical asceticism in five stages: from darkness to purification, almost Dantesque, starting from the infernal city of Babylon to the heavenly Jerusalem. Along the way, feelings of disorientation are accepted and suffered all at once emerging, with anguish, waiting for deliverance from a revelation. And so much of the landscape appears so vast as she, Alessandra, is fragmented. She magnifies the details, cuts out her own point of view, only to compare it at close range with the natural elements, insects, plants, the sky, the moon, grass, moss, inevitable but indeed essential travel companions.” (Stefano Bigazzi, dal catalogo della mostra, edito da Liberodiscrivere©)
